Remember Lead

7/8/2019 (Permalink)

Lead can be found in all parts of our environment as well as inside our homes, especially if that home was built prior to 1969. Lead and lead compounds have been used in a variety of products in and around our homes including, paint ceramics, pipes and plumbing materials. Lead can affect almost every organ and system in your body, if not careful. In rare cases, ingestion of lead causes seizures, coma, and even death. Keeping your home clean and well maintained will go a long way in preventing lead exposure. Inspect and maintain all painted surfaces to prevent paint deterioration. The most important step parents, doctors, and others can take is to prevent lead exposure is before it occurs. For questions or concerns on lead remediation, call SERVPRO of Champions/1960 the trained professionals.

What Is Soot?

6/4/2019 (Permalink)

Soot is what is left of solid materials that was consumed in a fire. Soot can be powdery and flaky. It's the carbon left behind on contents of burned materials. Cleaning up soot may involve repairing or replacing most surfaces in a home or business. SERVPRO of CHAMPIONS/1960 professionals, can determine what can be saved, during the restoration process. It's important to clean soot off all surfaces in your home or it will continue to stain and be distributed into the air. The first step to clean soot off any surface is to use a strong vacuum to remove loose particles. A vacuum with a HEPA filter is the best way to suck up soot. Use air scrubbers on site to help filter the air. When soot is dry it can easily be removed. Many items can be cleaned after a fire and soot damage, so your first concern should be deciding on the most efficient means of remediation. Call the professional of SERVPRO of Champions/1960 for questions and help.

Did You Know About Lead Paint?

7/9/2018 (Permalink)

Lead paint and lead poisoning as it pertains to old houses, have long been a lightening rod of controversy. Some people fear old homes of having lead paint and have difficulty buying them. Lead paint may not be the national health concern you've been told. For children and pregnant women, even the smallest amount of lead can be dangerous. Recent EPA, CDC rules and regulations concerning lead paint are completely unwanted and accomplish nothing , but increased cost for home owners. If your home was built before 1978,  there is a good chance it has lead base paint. SERVPRO of champions/1960 is very careful to follow the complex array of rules laid out in the Era's renovation, repair and painting act or (RRP), that went into effect in April 2010. Determine if your family is at risk for lead poisoning with the lead poisoning checklist. Be aware that a older home is more likely to have lead paint.

When Water met Wood

6/7/2018 (Permalink)

Water and wood don't mix. This is abundantly clear if you've been following the aftermath of hurricane Harvey. When water sits on top of hardwood floors it can permanently ruin the hardwood, as the wood will absorb the water through It's pores causing warping and discoloration. So if you have water damaged floors or even just a spill, you'll want to remove the water and dry your floors as quickly as possible. Speed is the key. The first 24 hours are critical and the longer the wood is in contact with water, the worst the damage could be. When water is removed from hardwood floors and properly dried you may be able to save the wood. Most likely you will need to sand and refinish the wood afterwards. SERVPRO of Champions/1960 will help you avoid the cost and hassle of ripping up and hauling away the hardwood, as well as paying for new wood and installation. Refinishing hardwood is less expensive vs replacing it.
